Editing
Copy Editing
A Copy Editor will correct typos, grammatical errors, and redundancies. She will improve word usage, verb strength, sentence structure, and tense problems.
You should always ask her to do a FREE 1,000 word sample edit.
All corrections should be inside a Word file or Google Docs with track changes feature.
The fees for a copy edit are usually around .01-.02 per word. Once an editor sees your manuscript, they should be able to give you an exact quote.
NOTE: Good editors are often booked out 1-3 months in advance. So schedule your spot early. Sometimes they get a last minute cancellation, so feel free to ask if they have immediate availability.
Proofreading
This is a final edit before publishing and is for manuscripts that have already been through a copy edit.
A Proofreader will check for typos, spelling, and grammatical errors.
The fee for proofreading is roughly .01 per word.
Audiobook Proofing
An Audiobook Proofer will listen to your raw audiobook files and proof the words spoken against an up-to-date version of your book. She will identify any missed or repeated words, mispronunciations, or noise problems.
You should receive a detailed report of each error with timestamp of the error’s occurrence.
Get References
Experienced editors should have a long list of clients they can reference. However, don't be too quick to gloss over those without experience. Editors need to start somewhere. Perhaps they will edit your book for free, just to gain some great experience. You could save some money at the same time as giving them a good reference. Win win.
